Separating the proven from the marketing: its best-studied effect is on stress, anxiety and sleep — here there are several decent, if small, studies. For testosterone, strength and "energy in general", the evidence is weaker and more conflicting. It is not a drug or a cure-all, but one of the few supplements in this category with any evidence base at all.

Where the evidence is strongest: stress and anxiety

Ashwagandha is classed as an adaptogen — plants credited with increasing resilience to stress. Unlike many of its shelf-mates, it has human studies. In several randomised, placebo-controlled trials, a standardised root extract reduced subjective stress and anxiety, and sometimes cortisol.

That is the best thing to say about the supplement: not "ancient wisdom" but a measurable effect under controlled conditions. The honest caveat: the studies are small and short, often funded by manufacturers, so this is "helps many" rather than a guarantee.

Sleep and recovery

The second most reliable area is sleep. There is evidence that ashwagandha slightly improves sleep quality and makes falling asleep easier, more noticeably in people with stress and insomnia.
