Curcumin and Turmeric: Does the Supplement Work, and For What?

Curcumin is the main active component of the turmeric spice, and almost all the "anti-inflammatory superpower" promises relate to it as a concentrated supplement, not a pinch of seasoning in a curry. Separating the proven from the marketing: the best-studied effect is reducing osteoarthritis pain, while many other loud claims still rest on the test tube. On top of that, curcumin has a technical problem — it is poorly absorbed, and this changes how it is taken.
Turmeric and curcumin are not the same
Turmeric is the spice, the plant's root. Curcumin is its main active polyphenol, but the spice contains only 2–5% of it. This is the key point: the doses that produced effects in studies (usually hundreds of milligrams of pure curcumin) cannot realistically be reached with seasoning. Turmeric in food is about flavour and a little benefit; the studied effects are about the concentrated extract.
Where there is evidence: joints
The most justified use of curcumin is osteoarthritis pain. Meta-analyses show a moderate reduction in pain and improved joint function; in some studies the effect was comparable to anti-inflammatory drugs. The same caveat as for most supplements applies: the studies are small and uneven in quality, so this is "grounds to try" rather than "firmly proven".

Where the promises outrun the science
Curcumin is a darling of "natural anti-inflammatory" marketing, and it carries many claims: from cancer prevention to treating depression and "cleansing". The problem is that most of these conclusions come from test tubes or animals, where curcumin shows activity that does not transfer directly to humans — especially given its poor absorption. Solid clinical confirmation for these uses is lacking so far.
Safety
At usual doses curcumin is reasonably well tolerated; high doses can cause stomach upset. Important nuances: it may enhance the effect of blood-thinning drugs, affect some medications, and stimulate bile flow (caution with gallstones). Rare cases of liver injury have been reported, sometimes linked to high-absorption supplements.

The bottom line: curcumin is not a miracle anti-inflammatory "for everything" but a supplement with moderate evidence, mainly for joint pain. If you try it, choose a higher-bioavailability form and keep your expectations realistic.
