Your one-rep max (1RM) is the heaviest weight you can lift for a single rep with correct form. It is the base unit of strength: almost every strength program prescribes load not in kilograms but as a percentage of 1RM, because a percentage transfers between people and exercises while an absolute weight does not.
The catch is that testing a 1RM directly is risky. A near-limit attempt is the least forgiving of technique errors. So in the vast majority of cases lifters do not lift it — they estimate it from an ordinary working set, which is safe and nearly as accurate.

Every formula rests on one pattern: the more reps you can do with a weight, the lighter that weight is relative to your max. The three classic formulas describe that relationship slightly differently.

A formula-based 1RM is an estimate, not a verdict or a guarantee. Your real max on a given day shifts with technique, warm-up, sleep, stress and even the time of day. Use the number as a starting point for choosing working weights, not as a record you must confirm at all costs.
And the safety point above all: never go for a true max attempt without warm-up sets and a spotter. The whole point of a submaximal estimate is to learn your strength level without the risk.

Take a weight you lifted for a set to (or near) failure and the number of reps, and plug them into a formula. By Epley: 1RM = weight × (1 + reps/30). For example, 80 kg for 5 reps gives about 93 kg. The calculator above averages three formulas so you are not relying on just one.
It is most accurate in the 2–10 rep range — usually within a few percent. Above 10–12 reps the formulas start to diverge and overestimate, because muscular endurance is driven by different factors than maximal strength. For a set of 3–6 reps the estimate is solid enough to program with.
So you can pick your working weight as a percentage of your max instead of guessing. Strength programs are written in percentages of 1RM: strength at 85–100% (1–5 reps), hypertrophy at 67–85% (6–12), muscular endurance below 67%. Knowing your 1RM turns those percentages into actual plates on the bar.
As a beginner, no. A true max attempt demands flawless technique, a full warm-up and a spotter; without them it is a fast route to injury. A submaximal estimate gives nearly the same number with none of the risk. Testing a real 1RM only makes sense for experienced lifters, supervised, and in strength sports where it is part of competition.
In practice they give close numbers in the working range and differ mainly at the extremes. Brzycki reads slightly low at high reps, Epley slightly high, and Lombardi is gentler than both. That is why the calculator shows all three and their average: a single 'most accurate' formula is a myth — lean on the range instead.
