How Many Steps a Day Do You Actually Need?
10,000 steps came from a 1965 pedometer advert. Here is what the big accelerometer cohorts show: where mortality risk really falls and where it flattens.

The 10,000-step target has no scientific origin whatsoever β it was the tagline of a Japanese pedometer sold in 1965. The real data are more modest and considerably more encouraging: most of the reduction in mortality risk is already achieved at 6,000β8,000 steps a day for people over 60, and at 8,000β10,000 for younger adults. Past those points the curve flattens, and its steepest, most valuable stretch lies between 2,000 and 6,000 steps.
Where 10,000 came from
In 1965, ahead of the Tokyo Olympics, the Japanese company Yamasa launched a pocket pedometer called the manpo-kei β literally "10,000-step meter". The figure was not derived from clinical data. It was round, it was memorable, and the character man (ten thousand) happens to look rather like a person mid-stride.
What followed was entirely predictable. The slogan stuck, migrated into fitness tracker defaults, and from there into popular belief and the home screen of every modern smartphone. By the time researchers got around to testing the number seriously, it had spent decades circulating as common knowledge.
What the large studies show
Several studies over recent years measured steps with accelerometers rather than questionnaires, and followed participants for years afterwards. Three carry most of the weight.
Lee IM et al., 2019. More than 16,000 women over 70, followed for about four years. Compared with a group averaging 2,700 steps a day, mortality was 41 percent lower at 4,400 steps and 58 percent lower at 7,500. Above 7,500 steps, no further reduction appeared.
Saint-Maurice PF et al., 2020. Nearly 5,000 US adults aged 40 and over, followed for a decade. Compared with 4,000 steps, mortality risk was 51 percent lower at 8,000 steps and 65 percent lower at 12,000. Walking intensity contributed nothing independent once total volume was accounted for.
Paluch AE et al., 2022. A meta-analysis of 15 cohorts, roughly 47,000 people across four continents. This is where the important age qualification appeared: in people aged 60 and over the curve plateaus at around 6,000β8,000 steps, while in younger adults it continues to about 8,000β10,000.

The main lesson: the first steps count most
The useful part of the curve is the beginning, not the tail. Going from 3,000 steps to 6,000 buys more health than going from 7,000 to 12,000. For someone whose day currently runs between a car seat and an office chair, this is excellent news: a goal of "plus 3,000 steps" is realistic, cheap and delivers the bulk of the available benefit.
The flip side is worth stating too. If you already walk 9,000 steps, squeezing out 15,000 will not add much. That time is better invested in resistance work, which covers what walking cannot.

Does pace matter?
It does, but less than commonly assumed. In the Saint-Maurice analysis, walking intensity lost statistical significance after adjustment for total step count. In other words, brisk walking is beneficial largely because it accumulates more steps in the same amount of time.
Cardiorespiratory fitness is a separate question. Improving it requires a heart rate range that a gentle stroll does not reach. This is the territory the WHO describes as 150β300 minutes of moderate aerobic activity per week: a brisk pace at which you can talk but would struggle to sing.

Accumulating more without a gym
Sedentary living is not solved by one grand effort but by a dozen small ones:
- Get off the bus or train a stop early β usually 800β1,200 steps
- Park further from the entrance
- Take every phone call on your feet; a 20-minute call is around 1,500 steps
- One flight of stairs instead of the lift β about 60β90 steps, and considerably more work than the same steps on the flat
- A 15β20 minute walk after dinner, which beyond the step count blunts the post-meal rise in blood glucose
How accurate are trackers?
A phone in your pocket and a wrist tracker count differently, and both are wrong.
- A phone typically undercounts: steps taken around the house without it in your pocket simply vanish
- A wrist tracker tends the other way, adding phantom steps during animated conversation, cooking or driving
- Error for most devices during normal walking is within 5β10 percent; during slow walking, or walking with a cane, it is markedly higher
The practical conclusion: do not compare your absolute numbers with anyone else's. Compare this week's figure with your own from last week. Your device errs consistently, which means it reports change accurately even when it reports magnitude poorly.
Steps and weight loss
Walking helps create a calorie deficit, but its contribution is smaller than most people expect. Ten thousand steps burn roughly 300β400 kcal in a person weighing 70 kg (154 lb) β about one croissant. The body also compensates in part, reducing spontaneous movement during the rest of the day.
This is not an argument against walking. It is an argument that weight is governed mainly by what you eat, while activity governs your heart, your vessels and your mood.

What to do with this
- Change nothing for a week β just observe your current average.
- Set a target 1,000β1,500 steps above that average and hold it for two weeks.
- The destination worth aiming for: 7,000β8,000 steps a day on most days of the week.
- Add two resistance sessions separately. Walking does not substitute for them.
- Do not chase 10,000 if it turns activity into an obligation. The difference between 8,000 and 10,000 is barely detectable in the data. The difference between 3,000 and 8,000 is enormous.
What matters in these numbers is not the threshold but the direction. Any movement upward from a sedentary baseline is repaid out of all proportion to the effort.
