A few nuances. Women's resting heart rates average 2–7 bpm higher than men's, partly because of a smaller heart size. Children run higher and slow with age. Older adults don't inherently have faster pulses, but arrhythmias become more common, so an irregular or very fast pulse deserves attention.

Three caveats before you apply this to your own number.
One reading is not a resting heart rate. A single measurement after coffee, a flight of stairs, or a bad night can be 10–15 bpm above your true baseline. The number that means something is the average of several mornings.
The trend beats the band. Moving from 78 to 66 over three months is a more meaningful signal than sitting at 66 all along. Equally, a jump from your usual 58 to a steady 72 with nothing else changed deserves attention even though 72 is squarely normal.
Symptoms outrank the number. A pulse of 45 in someone who feels fine and cycles at weekends is a good sign. A pulse of 45 with dizziness and breathlessness is a reason to see a doctor, and the number alone cannot tell those two apart.
What a low resting pulse means
A low resting heart rate (bradycardia — formally below 60 bpm) is a good sign for most people. Regular aerobic exercise increases the heart's stroke volume and strengthens parasympathetic tone, so runners, skiers, and cyclists often sit at 40–55 bpm at rest, a mark of good fitness.
But low isn't always harmless. It's a concern when it comes with symptoms:
- weakness and fatigue;
- dizziness or lightheadedness;
- shortness of breath during ordinary activity;
- fainting or near-fainting.
In those cases, bradycardia can point to conduction problems in the heart, sinus node dysfunction, medication effects (beta-blockers, some blood-pressure drugs), or an underactive thyroid. You can't tell "athletic" bradycardia from the pathological kind by the number alone — how you feel and the context are what matter.

Resting heart rate and prognosis: what the research shows
The evidence here is substantial and fairly consistent: the higher your resting pulse, the higher your average risk.
In a classic French study by Jouven and colleagues (NEJM, 2005), a high resting heart rate and a weak drop in pulse after exercise were linked to a higher risk of sudden cardiac death in initially healthy men. It was one of the first large pieces of evidence that heart rate isn't just a number, but a reflection of the heart's autonomic control.
A meta-analysis by Zhang and colleagues (CMAJ, 2016), pooling dozens of cohorts and over a million participants, found that each additional 10 bpm of resting heart rate is associated with roughly a 9% increase in all-cause mortality and an 8% increase in cardiovascular mortality. Another large meta-analysis (Aune et al., 2017) reached similar estimates and added a link to cancer mortality, though causation there is less clear.
An important caveat: a high resting heart rate is often a marker rather than a standalone cause of disease. It reflects deconditioning, inflammation, stress, or hidden problems. So the goal isn't to lower a number for its own sake — it's to address the causes, which is what improves the outlook.
Heart rate variability (HRV) — briefly
Alongside resting heart rate, you'll often hear about HRV (heart rate variability), which many fitness bands and watches display. If resting heart rate is your average pace, HRV is how uneven the intervals between beats are.
Counterintuitively, a healthy heart doesn't beat like a metronome: the intervals gently "float" with your breathing and parasympathetic activity. High HRV generally signals good recovery and a balanced nervous system; low HRV points to stress, fatigue, or under-recovery.
HRV is highly individual and depends on age and measurement method, so comparing your value to someone else's is meaningless. For the number to mean something, standardize the measurement. Otherwise you'll compare a post-coffee pulse with a post-sleep pulse and draw the wrong conclusions.

Counting at the neck (carotid artery) is convenient, but don't press hard — it can reflexively slow the heart. Don't panic over the odd "strange" reading: your pulse is alive and responds to everything from a heavy dinner to a restless night. Look at the average over several days and the trend over weeks.
How to lower your resting heart rate
The good news: resting heart rate responds well to a healthy lifestyle, and it improves relatively quickly. The biggest lever is aerobic fitness.
Regular aerobic exercise. This is the most powerful, best-proven approach. As your endurance grows, your heart becomes stronger and more efficient, and your resting pulse falls — usually noticeably within 4–12 weeks of consistent training. The WHO target is at least 150 minutes of moderate activity per week. Walking, running, cycling, and swimming all count.
Sleep. Chronic sleep deprivation keeps the sympathetic system revved and raises your pulse. Seven to nine hours of quality sleep lowers baseline heart rate.
Fewer stimulants and less alcohol. Caffeine temporarily raises your pulse, and alcohol raises resting heart rate — especially the next day. Cutting back on both often produces a visible effect.
Hydration. Dehydration makes the heart beat faster to maintain blood pressure. Adequate fluids help keep your pulse lower.
Stress management. Slow diaphragmatic breathing, regular relaxation, and walks lower sympathetic tone and resting pulse.

- your resting pulse is consistently above 100 bpm with no clear cause (tachycardia);
